Mordon

Kingdom of Verin

Tariqin War Camp

Mordon flung the tent flap aside despite the guard attempting to deny him entry. He stepped inside, and Winston looked up, startled. The death grip he had around a dagger stabbed into the table loosened. It seemed Vykus’s words had troubled him more than he’d let on.

The deedan behind Mordon spoke fast. “General, I could not stop him.”

Winston waved him off. “Leave us.”

Mordon waited until he heard the tent flap fall, his focus remaining rooted on Winston. “What are your plans for Velamir?”

Winston released the dagger, stepping around the table. “Velamir?” His eyes lit in understanding. “Ah, you heard my conversation with that ruffian.”

Mordon didn’t falter, his posture firm as Winston drew nearer.

“You are very clever, Cselnsor. However, I would prefer if you spied on the enemy rather than your own father.”

The enemy. Mordon was starting to wonder who wasn’t his enemy.

When he didn’t respond, Winston frowned, returning to the table to pour himself a glass of zat. He took a long sip, then smacked his lips in appreciation. He held the glass out to Mordon. “Would you like a drink?”

“I would like to know what you’re planning.”

“Stubborn, I admire that. I was tenacious like you when I was young.” His amusement faded. “I put a lot of work and years into Velamir. If he truly is coming, there could be two reasons for that. He’s either coming for his mother, in which case we will be prepared.”

Mordon scowled, remembering how Winston told Boltrex his wife was still alive. Mordon hadn’t seen a woman that resembled Serana in the camp. He’d memorized a portrait of her as a child—the only image of a mother he’d had. But Velamir had taken that too.

“But if he’s realized his mistake and wishes to repent and rejoin Tariqi . . .”

“What of Prolus? He will forgive a traitor?” Mordon was tired of everything falling into Velamir’s lap. Why was he so easily forgiven? Mordon was sure if Boltrex found out he’d become a Tariqin Calestor, he’d behead him himself.

“He overlooked your past and allowed you into the army,” Winston pointed out.

“I was tested and could have easily died.”

“There’s no use speaking of it. For now, Velamir is a traitor and will be captured on sight. There’s only one way for him to get through this camp unscathed, and that’s if he chooses the right path.” His voice dropped. “My path.”

Mordon’s brow furrowed. “We don’t need him. Once a traitor, always a traitor. He will turn again.”

Winston peered at him, as if trying to see through his hard exterior. “Why do you care so much about Velamir?”

“I want to get even with him. At least give him a scar that rivals mine.”

Winston’s mouth cracked into a hard smile. “If he doesn’t choose us, then you are free to do as you wish.”

Mordon’s fingers formed a fist. He wanted to push harder, but he knew he had to stay calm. Winston retreated to his seat.

“I want you to guard the prisoner tent with your men.
